Well-Known Chef Teaches Students at TPHS

Chef Domonic Tardy, who goes by Chef Dom, recently taught Tinley Park High School culinary students how to make s'more crepes.

For those unfamiliar with Chef Dom and his work, he currently serves as the Regional Chef Representative at Sullivan University. Aside from having numerous national certifications, he has also competed in many competitions on TV and even opened a restaurant with Chef Gordon Ramsey.

This is just a small glimpse into his impressive resume.

Chef Dom is on his 24th year in the hospitality industry and he has accomplished quite a bit. Including working for Jean-Philippe Maury-Bellagio, at numerous elite hotels and resorts in Las Vegas, and as an executive pastry chef with STARR Restaurant Group.

He also owns the consulting agency, Tardy House.

This is the second year Chef Dom has visited Tinley Park High School. Culinary Teachers, Maggie O'Connor and Rebecca Haustein frequently invite and find various chefs to visit their culinary classes and speak with students.

When chefs visit, they have the ability to promote their school, teach students a set of culinary skills, and explain their personal journey in the culinary field.

In this particular class, students learned how to make their own crepe. This was an interesting class for many students who had never heard of a crepe or tasted one. Some students were even able to use a cooking torch to roast their marshmallows.

"For the majority of the students, this was the first time they were hands-on in the lab setting," says Culinary Teacher, Maggie O'Connor. "I think Chef Dom got them excited for the semester ahead with lots of cooking and eating!"

Aside from learning valuable skills and eating delicious food, O'Connor also says the opportunity allowed students to learn about post-secondary options and the different ventures they can take if they are interested in the food industry.

"Many of the kids think the only career within the food industry is a Chef and we want to open their eyes to all the different options."

Rumor has it that Chef Dom will be visiting District 228'S Oak Forest High School and Hillcrest High School next! Students should look forward to an interactive and fun class packed with plenty of opportunities to learn new skills.
